In addition, quilters will be making cards for Christmas. In fact, fabric postcards have already been arriving for both of those holidays.

While I was at Miramar, I found out that soldiers from San Diego will once again begin deploying after the first of the year. It seems to me that there is no reason to wait until they are already over there. How about if we have our first 2008 Penny's Postcard Roundup start in January so individual soldiers can carry a pocket-size quilt with them as they travel across the globe to serve our country!

More later -Happy Quilting!

Penny Halgren

<!--

We thought that this fun and widely celebrated holiday would be a good time to just "pop" in to send our Thanks and Greetings to the troops serving in our military.

Photographs continue to be posted at www.Fabric-Postcards.com for this Roundup as well as all Roundups in the past.

Check it out to see what's been sent, and get your creative juices flowing to send a card or two of your own.

No special skill is required, just a few scraps of fabric and your imagination will put a smile on the face of a guy or gal who is far away from home wondering whether anyone is thinking of them.

Happy Quilting!

Penny Halgren
www.Fabric-Postcards.com

www.TheQuiltingCoach.com

<!--

You can watch it here:

Local Woman Touches Lives Of Troops Through Quilts - Video - KGTV San Diego

And, my local Assemblyman, Joel Anderson, recognized the work of our quilting community on the Friday before the 4th with a Resolution from the State Assembly.

Thank you to everyone who sent in postcards. To think that we reached 2163 soldiers with a piece of their homeland that they will have forever is just amazing!

Happy Quilting!

Penny Halgren
www.Fabric-Postcards.com

P.S. We're gearing up for the Halloween Roundup. I've been asked to speak at a local middle school about quilting, and I will be taking some fabric postcards for them to decorate. In addition to the 4th of July 2006, fabric postcards were Rounded up for Thanksgiving and Christmas 2006, and Valentine's Day and Spring 2007.

More than 1781 postcards were Rounded up by the earlier Posses. The 2nd Annual Penny's Postcard Posse could round up as many as 1200 fabric postcards to send to soldiers for their celebration of the 4th of July.

We are hoping that soldiers will sign on to the blog and post their comments about the cards when they receive them.

In the meantime, check out the pictures as they go up on the website and post your comments on the blog:

http://www.fabric-postcards.com/july0407pics.shtml

With more than 1200, it could take a few days to get them all posted, so visit that page often.

For all the scoop on the project, visit:

http://fabric-postcards.com/

Discover how you can get involved in The Posse and show your support for the individual soldiers who are thousands of miles away from home defending our freedom.

Happy Quilting!

Penny Halgren
www.Fabric-Postcards.com
Quilt Greetings Across the Miles

www.How-to-Quilt.com
Specializing in Information for Beginning Quilters

www.TheQuiltingCoach.com
Where Quilters Connect

<!--

When the mom told her, the little girl asked if she could send it directly to her brother who is stationed in Iraq. She proudly, yet sadly, tucked the postcard in her pocket so she could mail it to him. Just a little reminder of how individuals are affected by having their loved ones serving us to protect our freedom.

In addition to the kids, quilters from all around the country sent in cards. Several made more than one. Many needlessly apologized, saying that their cards weren't perfect, and said that it was the first quilt-type thing they had ever made.

All of the cards are wonderful, and I know that the soldiers will love and appreciate each and every one of them.

The dozens and dozens of cookies that will accompany these precious cards are getting ready to board a plane, and will be welcomed as the troops are reminded of home and the people here whose freedom they are protecting.

Pictures of the fabric postcards can be found at:

http://fabric-postcards.com/christmaspostcardpics.shtml

With the last minute roundup of hundreds of cards, we've gotten a little behind in posting the pictures, so we'll post them as we get them formatted. Keep watching!

It seems fitting that our day of collection is Pearl Harbor Day, giving us an opportunity to thank soldiers on active duty at the same time honoring soldiers stationed at Pearl Harbor during a time when the world was at war.

Thanks to everybody who participated. Bonnie, from Quillows by Bonnie (http://www.quillowsbybonnie.com/) rounded up a hundred of her family and friends and sent cards with greetings. (They are shown in the row on the right in the picture above.)

Husbands have joined in, kids have scribbled their greetings, and maybe even a dog or cat has included their fur with a greeting.

We've seen all sizes and shapes - well, many anyway! From tall, skinny Santas to fat Christmas ornaments, and everything in between. Very colorful, they are.

And the messages on the back. All with words of support, wishes for the holidays and prayers for their safe return home.

Our friends at the base in Idaho continue to be most grateful for all of these little treasures and send their best wishes to all of the quilters who participated.

Our deadline for postcards to be included with the 1000 dozen cookies that are being sent is December 7. But, there continues to be appreciation for fabric postcards for soldiers who are returning to the base, and for families in Idaho who are missing their husbands and fathers.

Send your fabric postcards along at any time, with any theme. "Thank you" cards and "Welcome Home" cards are especially welcome!

More later - I'm back to taking pictures so I can post them at Holiday Postcard Posse Central -

Happy Quilting!

Penny Halgren
www.Fabric-Postcards.com
Quilt Greetings Across the Miles

www.How-to-Quilt.com
Inspiration and Education for Beginning Quilters

<!--

The cards are rolling in, and the deadline is fast approaching.

The variety of postcards is fantastic - we've got fun snowmen, trees, ornaments, and evan Santa on motorcycles.

The kids and families in our schools are gearing up for some fun. I've delivered more than 25 yards of fabric to 4 different schools, and more to come.

To date, two classrooms and two whole schools will be contributing fabric postcards for this Roundup.

Good thing, since our goal is to get 1000 cards to send to troops from Idaho. These cards will be packaged with a dozen cookies. I'm glad I'm workin' on postcards and not cookies. Somehow, fabric seems more manageable!

Anyway, to see what has been contributed so far, check out Fabric-Postcards.com Holiday Pics

Also, on the home page of Fabric-Postcards.com, scroll down to the bottom and click on the picture of the house postcard to get instructions for some simple postcards that kids can design with crayons or markers.

Remember, the deadline to get them to me is December 7! They'll be on their way overseas on December 10 - to arrive in time for the Holidays.

Happy Quilting!

Penny Halgren
www.Fabric-Postcards.com
Quilt Greetings Across the Miles

www.How-to-Quilt.com
Inspiration and Education for Beginning Quilters

www.Rag-Quilt-Instructions.com
Fast, Fun and Funky Quilts
<!--

They are awesome... Now tomorrow I am taking them to the base and see how I can get them to airman... I picked a few and already sent them to friends overseas.. and I will go to family support tomorrow...

THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart.. my hubby was overwhelmed by these lovely pieces of love, also......

THANK YOU!!

Nanc

Thanks, Nancy, for letting us know how important these cards are to the men and women abroad.

The messages on the back of the cards are inspiring and full of encouragement. The letters that several of you sent with your cards were equally inspiring to me.

Many quilters' husbands decided to participate and sew postcards. Many said they had been in the service and wanted to continue to support the folks serving now.

Several quilters commented that it was their first attempt at a paper pieced quilt. And others said it was their first attempt at any kind of quilt.

I know that the troops will love each and every one of the cards, and appreciate the thoughts and love behind them.

And now for the Year End Holidays

Whichever holiday you celebrate at the end of the year - Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or just New Year, start stitchin' fabric postcards. Nancy and her local "support" troops (the families still on base) are baking 1000 dozen cookies to send overseas, and would like to have 1000 fabric postcards to send with them - one for every dozen.

That sounds overwhelming, but we can do this! There are 2 entire schools of children here in "my" school district who are planning to participate. With 300 children in each school, we're almost there.

More details and patterns will be forthcoming. In the meantime, stitch away and send your completed cards to me at: P.O. Box 2112, La Mesa, CA 91943. We'll get pictures posted and track progress toward the goal of 1000 cards.

Happy Quilting!

Penny Halgren
www.Fabric-Postcards.com
Quilt Greetings Across the Miles

www.How-to-Quilt.com
Inspiration and Education for Beginning Quilters

<!--

Especially when there is something fun and exciting going on, like making fabric postcards to send to the guys and gals stationed abroad.

Last week, Quilter Bonnie sent me the following email:

A Simple Thank You

Last week, while traveling to Chicago on business, I noticed a Marine sergeant traveling with a folded flag, but did not put two and two together. After we boarded our flight, I turned to the sergeant, who'd been invited to sit in First Class (across from me), and inquired if he was heading home.

"No," he responded.

"Heading out I asked?"
"No. I'm escorting a soldier home."

"Going to pick him up?"
"No. He is with me right now. He was killed in Iraq. I'm taking him home to his family."

The realization of what he had been asked to do hit me like a punch to the gut. It was an honor for him. He told me that, although he didn't know the soldier, he had delivered the news of his passing to the soldier's family and felt as if he knew them after many conversations in so few days. I turned back to him, extended my hand, and said, "Thank you. Thank you for doing what you do so my family and I can do what we do."

Upon landing in Chicago the pilot stopped short of the gate and made the following announcement over the intercom.

"Ladies and gentlemen, I would like to note that we have had the honor of having Sergeant Steeley of the United State s Marine Corps join us on this flight. He is escorting a fallen comrade back home to his family. I ask that you please remain in your seats when we open the forward door to allow Sergeant Steeley to deplane and receive his fellow soldier. We will then turn off the seat belt sign."

Without a sound, all went as requested. I noticed the sergeant saluting the casket as it was brought off the plane, and his action made me realize that I am proud to be an American.

So here's a public Thank You to our military Men and Women for what you do so we can live the way we do.

signed: Stuart Margel -- Washington, D.C

Red Fridays

Very soon, you will see a great many people wearing Red every Friday. The reason? Americans who support our troops used to be called the "silent majority." We are no longer silent, and are voicing our love for God, country and home in record breaking numbers. We are not organized, boisterous or overbearing.

Many Americans, like you, me and all our friends, simply want to recognize that the vast majority of America supports our troops. Our idea of showing solidarity and support for our troops with dignity and respect starts this Friday -- and continues each and every Friday until the troops all come home, sending a deafening message that ... every red-blooded American who supports our men and women afar, will wear something red.

By word of mouth, press, TV -- let's make the United States on every Friday a sea of red much like a homecoming football game in the bleachers. If every one of us who loves this country will share this with acquaintances, coworkers, friends, and family, it will not be long before the USA is covered in RED and it will let our troops know the once "silent" majority is on their side more than ever, certainly more than the media lets on.

The first thing a soldier says when asked "What can we do to make things better for you?" is ..."We need your support and your prayers." Let's get the word out
and lead with class and dignity, by example, and wear something red every Friday.

WE LIVE IN THE LAND OF THE FREE, ONLY BECAUSE OF THE BRAVE!!

If you haven't already gotten the details about our fantastic fabric quilt postcard "Turkey for the Troops," project, check it out here:

http://fabric-postcards.com/

Quilters from all over the world, and with all different skill levels are sending in quilts. Feel free to make up your own pattern, or just take a couple of pieces of fabric, zig zag around the outside, draw a picture, sign it and send it in. Our troops overseas will appreciate your thoughts and kind words.

It's free to participate. If you fill in the order form, with no credit card number, you can get updates on the project and tips about paper piecing.

If you have questions, send them to us at: turkeys@fabric-postcards.com We're here to help you on the project, and get as many sent off to troops abroad as we possibly can. Our goal is to gather more than 400 fabric postcards.

Happy Quilting!

<!--

This seems like a huge goal, yet when quilters gathered for a similar project for the 4th of July, more than 225 were shipped to Iraq.

Beginning with that group of quilters, we expect the group to expand, so we can easily reach 400 in no time at all, and far exceed that number by the deadline on November 7. This deadline will give us plenty of time to get them wrapped and shipped to our troops in time for them to celebrate Thanksgiving with a little turkey - or some other small piece from home.

Pictures of all of the fabric postcards are posted at:

http://fabric-postcards.com/turkeypostcards.shtml

Take a look at those and also at the postcards sent abroad in July:

http://fabric-postcards.com/memorialdaypostcards.shtml

to see some great ideas for your fabric postcard for our troops.

Come join Penny's Postcard Posse at:

http://fabric-postcards.com/

We're giving away a packet of FREE patterns for you to use, or create your own original design.

WE LIVE IN THE LAND OF THE FREE, ONLY BECAUSE OF THE BRAVE!!

If you haven't already gotten the details about our fantastic fabric quilt postcard "Turkey for the Troops," project, check it out here:

http://fabric-postcards.com/

Quilters from all over the world, and with all different skill levels are sending in quilts. But what if you are far away, fighting unpredictible enemies in a foreign land?

Even surrounded by your military friends, I would imagine that Thanksgiving just doesn’t have the same meaning.

And what about the “thanks?” There you are sitting among a bunch of military folk, sharing turkey (maybe) and stories of Thanksgivings at home, hearing words of appreciation from each other – about protecting someone’s backside from attack.

Because the last fabric postcard drive was so successful, I decided that gathering postcards for Thanksgiving would be a fabulous follow-up.

We all know that everyone loves a quilt and appreciates the love and warm thoughts stitched into the design. Full size quilts for the troops seemed pretty impractical, although I would imagine as the Fall turns into Winter abroad, some full size quilts might be much appreciated.

In any case, I decided that sending our thanks to the troops in pocket-size packets of love would once again be a fun thing to do.

This time, I started a little earlier on the project, so you would have more than just 3 weeks to get your postcards made and shipped to us. Imagine that, it’s the first week in October, and Thanksgiving is 8 weeks away. Given that it takes two weeks to deliver the post cards overseas, that means that you have 6 weeks from today to make a fabric postcard or two or three, and send them along to us here at www.How-to-Quilt.com / www.Fabric-Postcards.com.

And this time, I’ve put together more than just one pattern. The theme is turkeys. And they are traditional patchwork – paper pieced – and this packet of patterns is free.

All of the information is available at: www.Fabric-Postcards.com

It's FREE to participate, and you can use whatever design you would like - doesn't need to be turkeys.

Join in the fun and keep up with the progress. The goal is to get 400 fabric postcards to send overseas by November 7.

Happy Quilting!

Penny Halgren

www.Fabric-Postcards.com - Quilt Greetings Across the Miles

www.How-to-Quilt.com - Inspiration and Education for Beginning Quilters

<!--

And what a grand time to send thanks to our troops.

I have scoured my quilt block books for block patterns that are easy to make and have turkey in the name, and have come up with four of them. I am in the process of putting the patterns together in fabric postcard size, and will be writing step-by-step instructions for one of them.

These patterns can be paper pieced (foundation pieced) or patchwork pieced. The step-by-step instructions will be for paper piecing, so our beginning quilters can get a taste of paper piecing as a technique. (just don't eat this turkey - it probably won't taste very good anyway!)

Look for the patterns and announcement of the project the last week in September. This will give everyone 4-6 weeks to complete their fabric postcards, and send them along so we can forward them to the troops abroad.

All the goodies will be found at:

http://www.fabric-postcards.com/

Check back the week of September 25 (whoa! That's my mom's birthday - I won't reveal her age, though!)

Happy Quilting!

www.How-to-Quilt
Inspiration and Education for Beginning Quilters

www.Rag-Quilt-Instructions.com
Fast, Fun and Funky Quilts

©2006, Penny Halgren
Penny is a quilter of more than 24 years who seeks to interest new quilters and provide them with the resources necessary to create beautiful quilts.

This article courtesy of http://www.Fabric-Postcards.com. With a June 15 deadline and Magical Motivators, quilters all over the country are rushing to send their fabric postcards in to How-to-Quilt.com.

The project is to collect tiny quilts, more commonly known as fabric postcards, and send them to the troops overseas.

Penny's Postcard Posse began the project last Sunday, May 29, and already the postcards are rolling in.

Quilters in discussion groups are participating, quilters in quilt guilds are in on the deal, and individual quilters who have never done anything like this before are sending these tiny greetings in.

They are truly inspirational, and pictures are being added each day as the fabric postcards arrive.

There's still time to get the details and send yours in. It's really easy to participate.

Create your own design. There is a pattern available for an American flag paper pieced tiny quilt. We have been told that flags won't be acceptable for sending abroad, especially to Iraq. That being the case, any postcards that can't be sent to Iraq may go to a different site abroad, or may go to a hospital to be given to soldiers wounded in the war. Feel free to create a home scene, favorite park, tree, even a photo transfer of your family onto the fabric. Anything that will remind a soldier that we are with them and praying for their safe return.

Make it almost any size. We are trying to keep them small, so the soldiers can carry them in their pockets. Postcard size is a general guide - 3" by 5," 4" by 6" and anything in between. We'll take them all!

Use whatever materials you would like. Cotton is good, polyesters are fine. You can use batting, if you would like. Some quilters use interfacing, making it easier to write a greeting on the back. You may not want to get carried away with buttons and things that will dangle from it.

Yes, make a back and write a greeting! Include whatever information you would like. Some quilters have included their name and address. Who knows, you may get a letter from a soldier. How cool would that be?

You may send one directly to a soldier, if you have a contact and would like to do that. If you would like a picture of your postcard posted on our site, send the photo along to us at: info@how-to-quilt.com. Your picture can be any size. We will size it to fit our site, and post a large one as a link to boot!

Join in the fun! We will continue to post pictures, collect cards and keep you updated.

Happy Quilting!

Penny Halgren
www.How-to-Quilt.com
Inspiration and Education for Beginning Quilters

www.Rag-Quilt-Instructions.com
Fast, Fun and Funky Quilts

www.Fabric-Postcards.com
Quilt Greetings Around the World
<!--
